Tragic!!! Abia State Poly Undergraduate Absconds After Stabbing Hostel Landlord To Death

abia-poly-NL
An Abia State Polytechnic student, named Abel, has killed the landlord of one of the students’ lodges in the Immaculate area of Aba, Abia State.
Punch Metro learnt that Abel, a final year student of the Department of Architecture, allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach during a disagreement at the lodge.
Punch correspondent was told that the landlord had ordered that no female visitor was allowed to spend the night in the lodge.
The suspect was alleged to have breached the rule and was challenged by the landlord, which led to a fight between them.
In the ensuing scuffle, the suspect was alleged to have grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim in the stomach, before taking to his heels.
The landlord reportedly died on the spot.
His remains were recovered by the police and deposited in a mortuary.
A student of the institution, who identified herself only as Beatrice, explained that the caretaker of the lodge was the first to notice the breach of the rule, adding that he informed the landlord.
She said, “The incident happened around 9pm on June 29. The deceased had made a rule that no student living in the lodge should bring a lady to pass the night there. He also made it a rule that every visitor, be it male or female, must leave before night falls.
“However, the suspect brought home a female guest in the evening and both of them went inside his room. The caretaker of the lodge saw them and waited for them to come out, but they didn’t. He then put a call through to the landlord, who hurriedly went to the building around 9pm.
“On arrival, the landlord barged into the student’s room where he met both the lady and the student naked. Instead of excusing himself, he attacked the student with punches. The lady quickly grabbed a wrapper and ran out of the room into another student’s room in the lodge.
“As the confrontation continued, the student stabbed the landlord with a knife, put on his boxers and fled that night, leaving the landlord dead in his room.”
It was learnt that the incident threw the community into confusion as the matter was reported at a police station in the area.
The police were said to have launched a manhunt for the suspect with his picture posted at strategic areas in the school.
When contacted, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Nta Ogbonnaya, confirmed the murder, but said he could not tell what transpired between the suspect and the deceased. He said the case file had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigations, adding that the police would get the fugitive.

JAMB Releases Guidelines for University Admission (Federal, state and Private)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday announced its guidelines for admission process.

Its announcement through its website followed a week long meeting with universities and other tertiary institutions in the country.

According to the board, the modalities would be based on point system.

The board, which explained   how the admission process would work for JAMBcandidates and direct-entry applicants, also stated that varsities would collect screening fees from candidates at the end of admission process.

According to the board, the new method uses a point system, which is divided into other processes, that is easy to understand.

“Before a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been given provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process, so praying is all you can do now,” the statement on JAMB’s website said.

The second process, the board said, was the point system where admissionwould depend on the point tally of the candidate.

It said: “JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith.

“The points are evenly spread out between your O’level and JAMB results to provide a level playing field for all.

“In the first case, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has 10 points, the exam could be NECO, WAEC, GCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets two points. So, this means that aspirants with only one result are at an advantage but only just.”

The board explained that the next point grades fell into the O’level grades where each grade has it’s equivalent point;  A6 marks, B4 marks, C3 marks. So, the better the candidate’s grades, the better his/her  chances of securingadmission this year.

The next point is the UTME scores where each score range has its equivalent point which can be summarised thus: 180 – 200 (or 20 – 23 marks); 200 – 250 (or 24 – 33 points); 251 – 300 (or 34 – 43); 300 – 400 (or 44 – 60 points).

Giving a breakdown, JAMB explained that each categories contains five JAMB results per point added.

For instance, a candidate with 180 – 185 gets 20 points, a candidate with 186 – 190 gets 21 points, adding that the point system for direct entry will be released soon.

The board stated that fees would still be charged for screening which has replaced the Post UTME.

“It then comes down to the fact that fees will still be charged for screening, it depends on the school as well,” the statement said.

It also disclosed that catchment and ELDS will still be used!

“Merit contains 45 per cent of the total candidates for a particular course, catchment contains 35 per cent and ELDS and staff lists contains the rest.

“Cut off marks will be released by schools this year in the form of points and not marks. If a school declares it’s cut-off mark for Medicine as 90 points and JAMB grants a candidate with 250 a provisional admission but his/her total points falls short of the 90 points, then he/she will lose the admission. So, the provisional admission is just a means to an end, not the end in itself,” the statement added.

What’s Up With The University Of Lagos (UNILAG) Girls?

Unilag-Main-Gate-missing-girls
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has been in and out of the news lately. Regrettably, it has been more of bad news than good news.
From the sad news of Oluchi Anekwe, the 300 level first class undergraduate student of the department of accounting who was electrocuted to death by a high tension cable to the Student Union protest against the lack of basic amenities on campus, the 300 level student simply identified as Jacobs who died after reportedly taking a poisonous substance, and the perceived ineptitude of the university management in handling some of these crises. The only positive from the school was the sterling performance of Daniel Dada Ayodele, who graduated with 5.0 CGPA.
After a brief pause from the headlines and twitter, news frittered in of 17 missing Unilag girls. The circumstances surrounding their mysterious disappearance leaves so many questions. What happened? Twenty girls were supposed to go to Lekki for a party with an 80k thanks for coming but they apparently ended up in a White House in the middle of nowhere and only 3 came back crying that they barely escaped with their lives!
The next story was just the sheer nonchalant disposition of the management of Elegushi Beach. According to an eyewitness account, Funmi Odusina and Sola Ogunmefun both masters students of international law and diplomacy lost their lives at a friend’s birthday party after they drowned. Their death was complemented by the absence of lifeguards or emergency medical unit.
Some of these stories snake around young girls. The first set you may want to say allegedly disappeared because of their covetousness while the later was due to the carefree stance of beach authorities at Elegushi beach.
Unsurprisingly, you do not need to be a student of the University of Lagos to know that some female students on campus engage in high-level promiscuity and refined prostitution. In the evening on campus, you see female students at New hall or at the Moremi car park hanging out with guys or wealthy men-old enough to be their father. While the guys prefer to have s*x with them in their cars, these shameless old men usually ferry them off campus to hotels. In the same vein, it is not unusual for the students to attend off-campus parties on the island.
It is just unfortunate that some of these phantom parties and men who pick them have ulterior motives that have lead to the reported death of these students.
This is not restricted to Unilag alone as same happens across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. But, the management of some of these schools can only do little or nothing about it. Students are adults. You cannot monitor their affairs because they are expected to manage their lives. This is another reason parents do not bother to check their wards in school.
However, with these incidences, monitoring these students is ever more important as some of them are literally teething when they are admitted into school. They are not matured. Hence, they are susceptible to campus shenanigans.
They tend to get carried away by campus life. Before they know it, their GP is swimming in the lagoon, they are strong members of cult groups and the ladies are deep into junketing with wealthy men who shower them with irresistible gifts and mouthwatering vacations.
Having a robust and rounded life on campus is essential. It is important to indulge. Like many people say, you must pass through school and the school must also pass through you. But, in a bid to satisfy this urge, you must be wise when doing it. If you want to party, party with moderation. And if you have to leave campus, you should be careful with the activities you engage.
The police is investigating the disappearance, some of the managers of Elegushi beach are in police net, and the parents of these girls will be mourning the painful loss. Of course, they will rue the fact that these deaths could have been prevented. But who are we to question death? It could come at any day and time.
In all of these negatives, the Unilag authorities have always tried to absolve themselves of any blame. But, as far as the students are carrying the identity card of the school, it makes the management responsible. They should be proactive in protecting the students. For example, there should be a register for students to sign in and sign out. All unsavoury or distasteful event that happens to any Unilag students whether on or off campus gives the school bad PR. And many alumni of the school are genuinely concerned about these horrible headlines. Again the Unilag management must be proactive.
In the meantime, we hope the 17 girls will be found which is most unlikely and for God to grant the family of the girls the fortitude to bear the loss. Hopefully, students especially girls will learn from these incidents.
The University of Lagos must not lose its status as the university of first choice and the nation’s pride! This bad PR is not helping at all.

It will be recalled that the management of the University of Ibadan (UI) on Tuesday, 26th of April 2016, shutdown the institution indefinitely and ordered the students to vacate the campus with immediate effect.
